This research aimed to assess the prevalence of burnout syndrome (BS), contributing and protective factors for BS during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We performed cross-sectional mixed-method research among Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB-GYN) residents and Fellowships at Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital between December 2021 and March 2022. The Thai version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey was used to assess burnout before in-depth interviews. Based on review of the literatures, semi-structured interviews were undertaken. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a content analysis approach. Results: A total of 19 participants were interviewed. Overall prevalence of OB-GYN residents and fellowships-BS was 63.2%. Significant contributing factors to BS: (i) high workload and work-life balance, (ii) workload on education (iii) research during training, (iv) cultural Values of Medicine, and (v). feared contracting COVID-19. The protective factors for BS reduction were: (i) peer and family support, (ii) support and protection from physician mentors and (iii) need free time. Conclusions: Prevalence of BS in OB-GYN residents and fellowships was 63.2%. Factors contributing to BS may predict the condition and protective factors to help develop guidelines for BS prevention.
