Abstract

This research aims to study the social, cultural, and economic contexts influencing community adaptation in organizing tourism activities, explore stakeholders’ perspectives, and propose sustainable tourism development strategies. This qualitative research employed a critical ethnographic methodology. Key informants included 15 community leaders who are part of the local tourism management team, 5 local government administrators, 2 executives and managers of "Khao Mai Pla Mun" restaurant, and 10 tourists who participated in the activities. Data was collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation and analyzed using an integrated approach combining three analytical methods. The findings revealed that 1) The Praek Nam Daeng community integrates its traditional way of life with tourism activities, using local culture and wisdom as the primary selling points while simultaneously developing diverse tourism activities to support the local economy and meet tourists' needs. 2) The perspectives and experiences of stakeholders regarding success and challenges included the adaptation of power dynamics and roles within the community, perspectives on conflicts and negotiations between conservation and development, sustainability-oriented development and environmental negotiations, the distribution of benefits within the community, and shared experiences. 3) Factors contributing to the success of community-based tourism in the context of Praek Nam Daeng included the community adaptation to increase its appeal and attract new customer segments while maintaining the conservation of its traditional way of life and the environment
