Abstract

This article, titled “Fandom Culture and Digital Politics: The Emergence of the “Orange Fandom” in Thailand’s 2023 GeneralElection,” offers an analytical examination of the Orange Fandom as a distinctive form of political fandom that gained prominence during the 2023 general election. Drawing on theoretical frameworks from fan studies and participatory culture, the study seeks to understand the transformation of citizens, particularly younger generations, from passive recipients of political communication into active co-producers and disseminators of political content within digital media environments.

The analysis reveals that the Orange Fandom extends beyond conventional electoral support, functioning instead as a networked fandom that integrates popular culture, digital technologies, and affective political engagement. This phenomenon is manifested through the production and circulation of diverse forms of content, including short-form videos, political memes, fan art, and hashtag campaigns, which collectively contribute to shaping public discourse in online spaces. Such practices reflect a decentralized mode of political participation in which supporters actively construct and circulate political meanings.

The article argues that the rise of the Orange Fandom signifies a broader shift in Thailand’s political communication landscape, from top-down, institutionalized communication toward a participatory, network-driven model. This transformation highlights the growing capacity of younger generations to engage in agenda-setting processes and to negotiate political identities within contemporary digital contexts.
