A Comparative Study of Tourism Language in Thai and Chinese Tourism Websites

Abstract
This article aims to investigate the linguistic characteristics and functions of tourism language and to compare the language features used in tourism websites of Thailand and the People’s Republic of China. The Thai language data were collected from the website www.chillpainai.com in Thai, while the Chinese language data were gathered from the website ctrip.com in Chinese, from 2021 to 2022, totaling 400 excerpts. The analytical approach applied the frameworks of Dann (1996) and Durán-Muñoz (2012). The analysis was divided into two dimensions: the linguistic dimension, focusing on lexical use, syntax, and the use of symbolic aspect; and the functional dimension of tourism language. The study found that the tourism languages of Thailand and China exhibit distinct characteristics in terms of lexical aspect, syntactic aspect, and the use of symbolic aspect, with both similarities and differences. In terms of the functional dimension of tourism language, Thai tourism websites emphasize the interactive function between the speaker and the audiences, while Chinese websites focus on the poetic function that conveys profound ideas.
