A Comparative Study of Proper Name Translation in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two Playscript

Abstract
This study aimed to examine and compare the methods used for translating proper names from English into Thai in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two Playscript. Both works were translated into Thai at different times by the same translator, Sumalee. The data collected was analysed based on the translation methods outlined in the frameworks of Davies (2003) and Newmark (1988). The findings demonstrated that the translator’s choices of translation methods for proper names in both works were consistent. Transliteration was the most frequently used method while Omission was the least used. It suggested that the periods of translation didn’t significantly affect the selection of translation methods for proper name translation. The translator demonstrated strong consistency throughout the series. Clear criteria were established for translating each genre of proper names. Moreover, the translator used the same method when translating proper names that had previously appeared in the Harry Potter series, thereby ensuring continuity within the literary works of the series.
