Tonal Geography of Tai Khun

Abstract
This research article aims to analyze and compare as well as group the Tai Khun tonal system in Keng Tung province in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the Tai Khun in Chiang Mai province in Thailand and make a tonal linguistic map of the Tai Khun language. The results of the study revealed that the Tai Khun tonal system is categorized into six different tonal systems and categorizing the Tai Khun tonal system by using the criteria of tonal split and coalescences between the B and DL tones. The tonal system can be classified into three groups: Group 1 BDL123-4, Group 2 BDL1234 and Group 3 B1234, DL123-4. Using the criteria for the number of tonal phonemes, the Tai Khun tonal system can be divided into two groups which are the 5-tone system and the 6-tone system. The results of grouping of the Tai Khun tonal systems are presented in a linguistic map.
