A Political Economy Analysis of the Transformation of Ideological Values from Farmers to Farmer-Entrepreneurs

Abstract
This article aims to investigate the conditions contributing to the transformation of farmers into entrepreneurs in Khon Kaen province. A qualitative approach was adopted in this study to perform a holistic analysis on the concept of political economy, with an emphasis on the dimensions of history and conflict. In-depth interviews and observations were employed to collect data to conduct an inclusive analysis of the current phenomenon. Key informants included 4 local experts, 3 state officials, 15 farmer-entrepreneurs and 4 family members of the farmer-entrepreneurs. The informants were selected through convenient sampling and recommendations of the key informants. It was found that due to the unstable economic system and changing consumption trends, farmers have faced a number of problems and risks. Because of this, they needed to adjust themselves to become entrepreneurs at some level. In addition, they tried to change their economic behavior by relying more on the idea of cost-benefit analysis. At the same time, their ideals of agricultural production have been clearly seen. The adaptation of farmer-entrepreneurs mainly depends on skills, experience, and different forms of economic and social capital that bind them to the economic changes related to the market system, development policy, conditions of society and culture and changing ideological values. These conditions have become crucial factors for farmers to increase a variety of production methods, trade, and household investments in order to upgrade their farming career to finally become farmer-entrepreneurs.
