“Sak Kha Lai” Leg Tattoo: A Unique Characteristic of Phutai Ethnic Group

Abstract

Leg tattoo or Sak Kha Lai, is a Phutai Ethnic uniqueness. This paper aims at studying patterns of and beliefs toward leg tattoo of Phutai Ethnic group in three districts of Kalasin Province. Data were collected from 25 people who were divided into two groups. These were a group of 17 leg-tattooed people and a group of other people in their communities. The latter group included community leaders, folk philosophers and family members. The results find that leg tattoo patterns of Phutai Ethnic Group are as follows: Singha Mom, flowers, little birds, tamarind leaves, and seeds, scissors, saber knife, cutting pliers, and fang or canine tooth. All these tattoo patterns are arranged in squares. The leg tattoo patterns reflect five Phutai beliefs: a patriarchal tradition, a symbol of solidarity, a symbol of manhood, an impact on spouse selection, and a related sign to Singha Mom.
