Allusion of Suvarṇabhūmi in Sanskrit Tales

Abstract
The story of Suvarṇabhūmi has been well-known amongst Indian people for a long time and is found in many Indian primary sources. This leads to the main objective of this research article, which is to collect and translate Sanskrit tales of Suvarṇabhūmi into the Thai language and to analyze some relevant contexts related to them. Results show that there are eleven Sanskrit tales that cite Suvarṇabhūmi and Suvarṇadvīpa, namely the story of Supārga in Jātakamālā, the story of Sānudāsa and two merchants in the Brhatkathāślokasaṃgraha, and the story of two princesses, Anaṅgaprabhā, king Ratnādhipati, brahman Candrasvāmin, Cakra, Rudra and Samudraśūra, Ῑśavarman and Dīrghadarśin. Most Thai people are familiar with Suvarṇabhūmi through Pāli literature in the sense of an inaccessible land. In Sanskrit tales, both names, Suvarṇabhūmi and Suvarṇadvīpa, presumably refer to the same area. The Sanskrit tales of Suvarṇabhūmi could be traced to the legacy of Buddhism that flourished in North India contributing to the story of Suvarṇabhūmi in Hindu tales which were composed and prevalent in North India as well. The notions about Suvarṇabhūmi in those tales can be categorized into two main points. First, Suvarṇabhūmi is viewed as a dangerous but wealthy land. Second, Suvarṇabhūmi is viewed as a magical land. Although this study does not clarify its geography, it displays the trace of Suvarṇabhūmi in the Sanskrit tales and elucidates the views of ancient Indian people towards Suvarṇabhūmi.
