Diversity of Tone Systems and Tone Sandhi in Lue

Abstract
Lue is a Southwestern Tai language. Most Lue dialects have a 6-tone system while some have a 5-tone system. Having studied the earlier research on Lue dialects spoken in different areas such as Southern China, Laos, and Thailand, it can be said that tonal diversity and tone variations are clearly found in Lue dialects spoken in different areas. Furthermore, one interesting linguistic phenomenon in Lue dialects is tone sandhi which is rarely found in the other Southwestern Tai languages. This article presents the overall picture of tonal diversity and tone variations in Lue dialects. The patterns of tone sandhi in Lue dialects, based on the study of previous documents and research, will also be presented. Additionally, evidence from acoustic analysis of tones is used to confirm the tone sandhi patterns found in a Lue dialect. This kind of evidence of tone sandhi is rarely found in other research.
