Translating Siamese classical literature in French: a challenge

Abstract
The following communication was presented in a plenary talk by Gilles Delouche, professor emeritus and guest of honor, at the international conference "Carrefours Interculturels", held at INALCO, Paris, on November 20, 2018; the symposium was jointly organized by ATPF (Thai Association of French Teachers), Thammasat University, and INALCO. The organizers of the conference decided to publish the content of the plenary talk not in the proceedings of the conference, but in the journal of the faculty of liberal arts at Thammasat University (Journal of Liberal Arts).
Following the untimely death of Prof. Delouche, and before the publication of this article, the text has been reread and slightly annotated by us for this edition. In this article, Prof. Delouche councils students, colleagues, and other French-speaking translators on the Thai (or Siamese) language. His sudden departure is a great loss for the university community and for all his Franco-Thai friends.
