อัตตาและท่าทีต่ออัตตาในพุทธศาสนาเถรวาท

บทคัดย่อ

บทความนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายที่จะศึกษาเรื่องอัตตาและท่าทีต่ออัตตาในพุทธศาสนาเถรวาท เพื่อหาคำตอบว่าอัตตาในพุทธศาสนาเถรวาทมีความหมายและลักษณะอย่างไร สอดคล้องกับทัศนะอื่น ๆ หรือไม่ และพุทธศาสนาเถรวาทมีท่าทีต่ออัตตาในลักษณะนั้น ๆ อย่างไร อันจะเป็นเครื่องคลายข้อสงสัยเกี่ยวกับจุดยืนของพุทธศาสนาเถรวาท ที่เกี่ยวเนื่องกับเรื่องอัตตาซึ่งมักเกิดกรณีถกเถียงกันอยู่เสมอ ๆ

ผลการศึกษาพบว่า อัตตาในพุทธศาสนาเถรวาทสามารถแบ่งได้ 3 ลักษณะ คือ

1. อัตตาในแง่อภิปรัชญา อัตตาในแง่นี้พุทธศาสนาเถรวาทปฏิเสธ คือ ไม่ยอมรับว่ามีอยู่จริงและมองว่าการยอมรับความมีอยู่จริงของอัตตาในแง่นี้เป็นมิจฉาทิฏฐิ

2. อัตตาในแง่สมมติบัญญัติ เป็นอัตตาที่ใช้สมมติเรียกขานตัวบุคคลเพื่อสื่อสารระหว่างกัน ซึ่งมีใช้อยู่โดยทั่วไป

3. อัตตาในแง่ที่เป็นกิเลส คือ ทิฏฐิและมานะ เป็นอัตตาอีกแบบหนึ่งที่ปรากฏในพุทธศาสนา ซึ่งพระพุทธเจ้าทรงมุ่งให้ละ เพราะหากไม่ละย่อมไม่สามารถพ้นทุกข์ได้

This article is written for the purpose of studying the concept of ‘the self’ and the reaction of Theravāda Buddhism against this concept. An aim of the study is to search for the answer of what should be the meaning, characteristics and relationship of the self (Attā) to other views. In addition, studying the reaction of Theravāda Buddhism against ‘Attā’ will help us understand the Buddhist standpoint in relation to ultimate liberation, which has always been a controversial issue.

The study reveals that Attā in Theravāda Buddhism can be summarized in three categories:-

1. Attā in its metaphysical aspect. Theravāda Buddhism denies the existence of Attā in this sense, for the acceptance of a metaphysical self is nothing but a wrong view.

2. Attā in its conventional aspect. This sense is useful in human contact and communication even among Buddhists.

3. Attā as a group of defilements, namely the view (wrong view) and the conceit. This concept is easily found in Theravāda Buddhist teachings, where these defilements have been ordered to be put aside by the Buddha in order to liberate us from all kinds of suffering.
