THE ROLE OF THAI LITERATURE IN TAKING RESPONSIBILITY VIA THAI LITERARY BOOKS FOR MATHAYOMSUKSA 4 STUDENTS

Abstract

This academic article analyzed the role of Thai literature in enhancing students’ willingness to take responsibility for themselves and society as presented in the Thai literary books for Mathayomsuksa 4 students. The scope of the article focused on five Thai literary books: 1) Namatsakan Matapitukhun and Namatsakan Achariyakhun, 2) Inao: The Battle of Kamangkuning, 3) Huajai Chainum, 4) Mongkhon Sut Kham Chan, and 5) Tales of Vetal: Tale 10. The analysis revealed that Thai literature played an important role as a mirror reflecting society while embedding moral teachings and philosophies of life. This role was presented through the consequences of characters' actions, the guidance of moral principles, and examples of responsibility. When these literary contents were integrated into active learning activities that emphasized learner participation and practical engagement and were informed by Kohlberg’s theory of moral development, they could serve as an important tool for cultivating and enhancing students’ willingness to take responsibility for themselves and society.
