Abstract

This article focuses on the study of waste disposal as more-than-human relations, with the objective of examining the impacts of waste disposal at Nong Khaem waste transfer station on the relations of nonhuman entities. It is qualitative research employing a more-than-human autoethnographic method, with key informants being officials at the waste disposal center, community leaders, and residents living in proximity to the waste disposal center. The research instruments include semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and data analysis conducted through the concept of Vital Materialism, which helps explain how the experiences of nonhuman entities relate to waste disposal and what kinds of impacts they produce.

The findings reveal that the cases of foul odor, fly larvae, and cattle egrets are relations that arise within the waste disposal process and are likewise impacts that occur on society. The case of foul odor reflects that waste disposal is always subject to leakage, even with regulation and control of waste and odor, whereby the leakage of foul odor originates from nonhuman entities unintentionally carrying odor outward and entering into the phenomenon of disturbing people’s living conditions, thereby giving rise to a politics of foul odor. In the cases of fly larvae and cattle egrets, they reflect the gaps in waste disposal that open opportunities for these entities to form relations with waste, existing beyond human control, and constituting a waste disposal ecology in which nonhuman entities are part of the city’s waste disposal.
