THE FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS: ENDING THE ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN CONFLICT (GAZA STRIP)

Abstract

The objectives of this article were to analyze the context of the Israel–Palestine conflict in the Gaza Strip and to propose a framework for applying the principle of the Four Noble Truths (Ariya Sacca 4) as an integrated approach to addressing problems rooted in greed (Lobha), hatred (Dosa), and attachment to self-interest. The study emphasized that both parties should reduce rigid attitudes, promote mutual understanding, and create opportunities for genuine compromise, which are essential for the cessation of suffering (Nirodha) and the establishment of sustainable peace. The findings were as follows. First, Dukkha (Suffering) referred to the prolonged conflict that has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis for the people of Gaza. The population has faced threats to life, forced displacement, and profound socio-economic hardship. Major problems included famine, food shortages, the collapse of public health systems, blockades and restrictions on humanitarian aid, large numbers of casualties, economic devastation, and limitations on rights and freedoms. Second, Samudaya (Cause of Suffering) indicated that the root causes of suffering stemmed primarily from Lobha, manifested as the desire to control territory, resources, and political power, and Dosa, reflected in anger, hostility, and accumulated resentment. These factors were further intensified by complex historical, religious, and geopolitical conditions, which have continuously reinforced cycles of conflict and mistrust. Third, Nirodha (Cessation of Suffering) suggested that the alleviation of suffering could be achieved through the termination of violence, the promotion of peaceful dialogue, and the reduction of political and social tensions. It also required the development of new perspectives between both sides, mutual recognition of rights and needs, and sincere engagement in compromise. Fourth, Magga (Path to the Cessation of Suffering) involved applying the Noble Eightfold Path (Ariya Magga 8) as a constructive framework for peace negotiations. This framework emphasized Samma Ditthi (Right Understanding), Samma Sankappa (Right Intention), Samma Vaca (Right Speech), Samma Kammanta (Right Action), Samma Ajiva (Right Livelihood), Samma Vayama (Right Effort), Samma Sati (Right Mindfulness), and Samma Samadhi (Right Concentration). These principles encouraged ethical conduct, emotional regulation, and rational decision-making, thereby supporting the development of justice, reconciliation, and long-term peace in society.
