THE NEOLIBERAL MODE OF THOUGHT AND THE DECLINE OF LIBERAL DEMOCRACY

Neoliberalism is generally presented as a concept compatible with liberal democracy because it emphasizes individual freedom of choice in a free market. This emphasis thus aligns with the concept of individual liberty as one of the core principles of liberal democracy. However, this article argued that neoliberalism as a mode of thought centered only on utility, measurable outcomes and quantitative success can undermine liberal democracy since it marginalized the humanities and some parts of social sciences – disciplines whose main objective was not to produce utility or measurable success but to cultivate rational, responsible and tolerant citizens essential to the persistence of liberal democratic society. Therefore, a possible consequence of the said circumstance is the decline of liberal democracy.
