Conservation of Ethnic Identity focusing on Tradition of Lao Wiang Group in Plapphla Chai Sub-district, U Thong District, Suphan Buri Province

Abstract

The research article entitled "The preservation of traditional identity of Lao Wiang ethnic group in Phapphachai Sub-district, U Thong District, Suphanburi Province” aimed at studying the traditional identity of Lao Wiang Group in Phapphachai Sub-district, U Thong District, Suphanburi Province, and studying the process of preserving Lao Wiang Group’s traditional identity in Phapphachai Sub-district. Based on the study, the findings revealed that Lao Wiang in Phapphachai Sub-district have held traditional activities all year round. On traditional identity preservation, the following aspects are found: 1) Way of life: Various traditions are related to or are a part of the Lao Wiang people's way of life; 2) Adaptation: Lao Wiang people have adapted their way of life in response to the changes in society; 3) Transmission which focuses on children and youth in educational institutions; 4) Inheritance which emphasizes the importance of community engagement in traditional activities; 3) Beliefs in sins-merits: The people of Lao Wiang believe in the merits and sins. The majority of the traditions are concerned with sin-merits and rebirth; and 4) Beliefs in the divine spirit as they are expressed in many traditions. People of Lao Wiang believe that the holy spirits will protect them. When they are in difficulties, they will pray to the holy spirits for help.
