Abstract

This study attempts to analyze the traits of the types of puns and the translation of sexually explicit puns in 13 episodes of the Thai boys' love drama "2gether The Series" that are subtitled in Chinese. According to Delabastita's classification, the study's findings showed that a total of 22 sexually suggestive wordplays were utilized in this boys' love series. Wordplay in the source language was classified as homonyms; in contrast, wordplay in the target language is classified as terms that are similar in form or sound. By using the six strategies of Delabastita and He to analyze the translation pun strategies of sexual implications, it is revealed that the most popular strategy is the one that translates a play on words in the source language as if it were not a play on words (PUN > ZERO), which is a straightforward literal translation. Second most common include converting a play on words from the source language into a non-pun while keeping only one of the key meanings (PUN > NON-PUN), as well as converting puns from the source language into other compositional devices like rhyme, idiom, or consonant mixing. The least used strategies are those for converting wordplay from the source language into wordplay in the target language (PUNNING CORRESPONDENCE), for changing the original meaning so that it becomes wordplay in the target language (CHANGE OF IMAGE), and for removing double meaning (SACRIFICE SECONDARY INFORMATION).
