Caring for Dependent Elderly and the Development of a Health Care Model for Caregivers in Surin Province

The increasing number of dependent older adults in communities has placed physical, psychological, and social burdens on families and caregivers. This sequential exploratory mixed-methods study aimed to analyze the caregiving situation for dependent elderly individuals, develop a health care model, and evaluate the model's effectiveness within the local community context of Surin Province. The sample consisted of 50 purposively selected dependent elderly individuals and their caregivers in Chikdaek Subdistrict. Research instruments included a quality of life assessment, in-depth interview guide, and caregiver self-efficacy and stress scales. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Paired t-tests, while qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis. Findings revealed that local caregiving was characterized by family members, particularly daughters, serving as primary caregivers, supported by seven forms of community networks. The overall quality of life of the elderly was at a moderate level (Mean = 2.97, S.D. = 0.38), with physical health challenges identified as the most critical concern. A 7-component care model was developed to holistically empower caregivers across psychological, practical, and social dimensions. Following implementation, caregivers' perceived self-efficacy significantly increased from a low level (Mean = 47.22, S.D. = 7.24) to a high level (Mean = 70.39, S.D. = 9.67), while stress levels declined. These findings suggest that the developed model can serve as a practical framework for advancing community-based long-term care systems and informing related policies.
