An analysis of complex sentence structures containing noun clauses in Thai grammar textbooks

Abstract

This research paper aims to analyze the structures of the example complex sentences with noun clauses in 17 Thai grammar textbooks. The researcher had applied NimKanchanajiva’sconcept of complex sentences with noun clauses (2005) in analyzing sentences.

The results showed that there were 100 example complex sentences with noun clauses in Thai grammar textbooks. The noun clauses could be divided into 7 structures including 1. 44 sentences containing noun clauses as an object with the structure of subject + verb + object (44%); 2. 15 sentences containing noun clauses as a subject with the structure of subject + verb + (object) (15%); 3. 15 sentences containing noun clauses as a subject with the structure of subject + verb (linking verb) + complement (15%); 4. 12 sentences containing noun clauses as a complement with the structure of subject + verb (linking verb) + complement (12%); 5. 11 sentences containing noun clauses as a subject complement with the structure of subject + verb (11%); 6. 2 sentences containing noun clauses as an object with the structure of subject + verb + object (2%), and 7. 1 sentence containing noun clause as an object complement with the structure of subject + verb + object (1%).
