Gender Ideologies Conveyed Through Linguistic Strategies in Upper Secondary English Textbook Discourse

Abstract
This research aimed to study gender ideologies implicated through linguistic strategies in upper secondary English textbook discourse used in Thailand. Framed within Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis approach, the research examined a corpus of 18 textbooks comprising 380 texts. The findings showed that the textbooks consistently depict the ideological construction of gender, which consists of 3 sub-ideologies: (1) gender roles (2) gender stereotypes and (3) gender relations. These ideologies were conveyed through 7 linguistic strategies. These are lexical strategies, modality, syntactic structures, metaphor, rhetorical questions, presuppositions, and intertextuality. The findings further indicated that while English textbooks still reproduce patriarchal ideology, emerging feminist perspectives are beginning to challenge and equalize gender roles.
