Semantic Loss in Translating English Count and Non-count Nouns into Thai by English Majors at Burapha University

Abstract
This research explored the patterns of semantics lost in the translation of English nouns into Thai. This research employed a qualitative approach. The data were collected from the translation test among the sample group of 230 English majors at Burapha University. The result showed the semantics had been lost in five error patterns, namely 1) deletion or non-translation of nouns 2) translation of nouns into verb phrases 3) translation of nouns with other grammatical information 4) literal mistranslation of nouns with correct grammatical information 5) transliteration or transcription. The result may equip translators to avoid all the relevant translation errors and also provide them with keys to practical translation techniques in translating nouns in other contexts.
