Buddhist Terminology Translation Regarding the Tourist Route of 8 Birthday Relic Pagodas in Nakhon Phanom Province Under Mona Baker’s Translation Theory

Abstract

The research aims to: 1) compile a vocabulary list of Buddhist terminology regarding the tourist route of the 8 birthday relic pagodas in Nakhon Phanom province; and 2) investigate the translation techniques of Buddhist terminology under the translation theory of Mona Baker. According to the field research, 156 Buddhist terms were collected. The research found that the translation techniques based on the translation theory that were used to translate Buddhist terms could be categorized into three forms: 1) the Buddhist terminology translation by using one translation technique per term; 2) the translation by using two techniques per term; and 3) the translation by using three techniques per term. The research found that the first form of translation is one in which the recipient can precisely and clearly understand both the original and translated language's meaning. The second and third forms are used to solve the problem of terms where the word level of the original language and the translated language are not equal and have multiple syllables. The suggested solution is to combine two translation techniques to convey the meaning clearly, or to combine three translation techniques. The translator starts with the first form, then the second form, and finally the third form to convey the meaning of the terms in the original language and the translated language as accurately as possible.
