The Development of Essay Writing Ability of Mathayomsuksa 1 Students through Genre-Based Learning

Abstract
This research aims to 1) compare essay writing ability of Matthayomsuksa 1 students before and after studying through genre-based learning, and 2) study Matthayomsuksa 1 students’ opinion towards genre-based learning. The participants in this study consisted of 26 Matthayomsuksa 1/1 students at Nongpho Wittaya School, Photharam District, Ratchaburi, who were enrolled in the second semester of the 2024 academic year. The participants were selected using Cluster Sampling with classrooms used as the sampling. The study was conducted over a total of 10 class periods, including 8 learning periods, and 2 periods for pre-test and post-test assessments. The research instruments were 1) lesson plans, 2) essay writing ability test, and 3) student opinion questionaire on genre-based learning. The statistical methods used for data analysis were mean (M), standard deviation (SD), and dependent t-test. The research found that: 1) students’ essay writing ability after participating in genre-based learning was significantly higher than before, at the .05 level of statistical significance, and 2) students’ opinions on genre-based learning were at the highest level of agreement.
