Slang Words in Thai and Chinese on Entertainment News Page "Tai Tiang Dara" and "Xinlang Yule"

Abstract
This qualitative research investigates the characteristics and functions of slang in Thai and Chinese entertainment news, comparing both languages. Thai slang was collected from the entertainment news page "Tai Tiang Dara" and Chinese slang the entertainment news page "Xinlang Yule" from June 1, 2021, to May 31, 2022, identifying 629 Thai slang terms and 610 Chinese slang terms.
Functional analysis indicated that Thai slang served 9 primary functions: emphasizing meaning, condensing communication, expressing novelty, creating humor, enhancing vividness, fostering camaraderie, teasing, avoiding taboo language, and conveying satire. Chinese slang exhibited 10 functions, including condensing communication, expressing novelty, emphasizing meaning, creating humor, enhancing vividness, fostering camaraderie, conveying satire, teasing, criticizing, and avoiding taboo language.
