Integrating Eco-linguistics to Develop Global Citizenship and Environmental Conservation Skills in the English Classroom for Grade 8 Students
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to 1) examine and analyze the development of global citizenship skills and environmental conservation awareness through eco-linguistic activities in English classrooms,2) evaluate the effectiveness of using an eco-linguistic approach to promote global citizenship and environmental conservation among Grade 8 students, and 3) explore students' news article writing skills within the context of environmental learning.
The research employed a mixed methods approach (Mixed Methods Research), guided by the principles of Eco-linguistics and Global Citizenship Education. The sample consisted of 42 Grade 8 students from The Prince Royal's College in Chiang Mai. Research instruments included eco-linguistics-based learning plans and a news article writing skills assessment. The effectiveness of the learning plans was evaluated using a 5-point Likert scale by three experts, with results analyzed using mean scores. Student abilities were assessed through mean and standard deviation across five aspects.
The findings revealed that 1) the development of learning activities based on eco-linguistics significantly enhanced students' global citizenship skills and environmental conservation awareness, and 2) this approach enabled students to effectively integrate environmental knowledge with English language usage.
