Characteristics of Mathematics Tasks for Development Students’ Core Competencies in Mathematics in Everyday Life

Abstract
This research aimed to study the characteristics of mathematics tasks for the development of mathematics in the everyday life core competencies of students. The study consisted of survey research, and the target group were nine experts who were professors in mathematics education, mathematics teachers, and writers and designers of mathematics textbooks. The purposive sampling method was used for selecting the target group. The data collection tool was an expert opinion questionnaire on the characteristics of mathematics tasks for the development of mathematics in the everyday life core competencies of students. The data were analyzed using content analysis. The study's findings revealed that the characteristics of mathematics tasks for the development of mathematics in the everyday life core competencies of students should be considered domain characteristics in five dimensions: 1) the context used in the task should connect with the everyday life of the student and not be more complex than the student's ability to understand it; 2) problems in the task should be realistic, and solutions should be valuable for the students; 3) the fundamental capability used to solve problems in the task should have scope in the curriculum and not be beyond the level of the student; 4) work processes should emphasize integration knowledge, mathematical processes, attitude, and attributes in mathematics; in addition, the task should promote student use of auxiliary processes such as exploration and inquiry; and 5) the cognitive demand of the task should be higher-level thinking.
