Activities for promoting self-esteem among the elderly in Khlong Hae Municipality, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province

Abstract

This research aimed to study activities for promoting self-esteem among the elderly in Khlong Hae Municipality Community, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province. This qualitative research employed Cooper Smith's Self-Esteem Concept as a research framework. The research area was Khlong Hae Municipality Community, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province. The key informants were 13 female early-aged elderly people selected by a specific method. Four types of research instruments were used: 1) Daily Activities Assessment Form (ADL), 2) Dementia Assessment Form, 3) Elderly Self-Esteem Assessment Form, and 4) Activities Promoting the Self-Esteem of the Elderly Interview Form. The qualitative data was analyzed by content analysis and then described. The results showed that the activities that the elderly in Khlong Hae Municipality Community, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province want are various activities to promote and create self-esteem which can be summarized into 7 types: 1) fun activities, 2) activities that promote physical and mental fitness, 3) activities that generate learning and income, 4) activities that create success, 5) activities that generate benefits, 6) activities that build acceptance, and 7) activities that increase relationships. The findings of this research will be useful for relevant agencies to set guidelines for organizing activities in response to the actual needs of the elderly to promote good physical and mental health among the elderly as well as the feeling of being valued and able to live happily with the family and the community.
