Some Thoughtful Points: The Case of English Teachers between Native and Non-Native Teachers in the Context of Teaching English as a Foreign Language

Abstract

English has long been recognized as an International language and a lingua franca. Consequently, the number of non-native speakers using English for communication exceeds the number of native speakers. This has led to a greater number of non-native English teachers compared to native English teachers. True nativeness should not be measured by the country of birth. Native-speaking teachers have the advantage of explaining the diversity of language and culture better than non-native teachers. Conversely, non-native teachers may better address the difficulties learners face with English grammar as a foreign language. Therefore, the hiring policies of any educational institution should not prioritize nativeness but rather consider language proficiency, teaching ability, and instructional skills.
