THE POLYSEMY OF A THAI VISUAL PERCEPTION VERB [hen]

Abstract
A Thai visual perception verb hen is a polysemous word. Apart from the meaning “visual perception”, it can also be referred to the meanings concerning the cognitive perception such as “know” or “understand”. In this article, these cognitive perception meanings found in the Thai verb hen have been claimed as the extended meanings from its visual perception meaning by the conceptual mechanism called ‘metonymy’ motivated by the close relationships between the visual and cognitive processes which are deeply entrenched in the cognitive system of the language users.
