Roland Barthes’s Fundamental Concept of Semiology

Abstract
The article aims to explain Roland Barthes’s fundamental concept of structural semiology. Roland Barthes was a French pioneer in a study of cultural semiology. The French scholar was very well-known through his famous articles that were translated into English. Barthes’ articles give descriptions of a system of signs, a signification and rhetoric of signs. They were combined as an effective structure affecting a signification of cultural subjects.
The article reviews his case studies which had performed an analysis method of the study of rhetoric of signs in advertising, photos, and fashionable clothes. According to Barthes’ analysis, cultural signification of still objects, such as advertising photos and fashionable clothes, also have a meaning behind the rhetoric of signs. Thus, a target group tends to easily satisfy the products. Therefore, Roland Barthes’s theory of cultural semiology is very helpful for an awareness of a consumerism.
