Effectiveness of physical therapy combined with acupuncture among ischemic stroke patients in intermediate care, community hospital in Khon Kaen Province

Abstract
Background: Stroke is a global health problem. Several studies have shown that acupuncture combined with rehabilitation can improve the quality of life of the patients.
Objective: To compare the Barthel Index for Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and motor power between the ischemic stroke patients treated with acupuncture (AC) combined with physical therapy (PT) and a control group treated with physical therapy alone.
Method: A nonequivalent control group quasi-experimental research was performed in this study. The samples consisted of 46 ischemic stroke patients treated between November 2021 – March 2022. Patients were divided into two groups: a control group, which was treated with PT alone, and an experimental group, which was treated with AC combined with PT. To evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment, the ADL and motor power were compared between two groups after 4, 8, 12 and 16 sessions of each treatment. The data were analyzed by using the Paired-T test and Mann Whitney U test.
Result: Mean of ADL after recovery of both groups was significantly higher than that before the treatment (p<0.001), at 11.03 for the experimental group, and 10.47 for the control group. The mean of motor power was significantly higher (p<0.001) in both groups, at 3.07 for the experimental group, and 1.82 for the control group. Moreover, when compared between two groups, the results indicated that both mean of ADL and mean of motor power of the experimental group were significantly higher (p<0.05) compared to the control group after 16 treatment sessions.
Conclusion: The PT in combination with AC has benefits for the treatment of ischemic stroke patients in intermediate care in comparison with PT alone in the aspect of motor power and ADL assessment. Therefore, the PT combined with AC should be given for ischemic stroke patients in community hospitals.
