The Development of English Teachers for Improving Speaking Skills of the Students by Using Professional Learning Community in Anuban Prachuap Khirikhan School

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to develop English teachers using a Professional Learning Community (PLC) to enhance the speaking skills of students at Anuban Prachuap Khirikhan School, and to improve the English-speaking skills of Grade 5 students at the school. The target group consisted of 106 Grade 5 students (from class 5/1, 5/3, and 5/5) and 6 English teachers of Anuban Prachuap Khirikhan School. The research instrument utilized was a manual for developing English teachers through a Professional Learning Community to enhance students' English-speaking skills. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean (bar{X}), and standard deviation (S.D.).

The research findings indicated that:

The development of English teachers through the Professional Learning Community to enhance students' speaking skills was aligned with the research objectives. Regarding the students' speaking skill development, out of the 106 Grade 5 students (classrooms 5/1, 5/3, and 5/5), 68 students achieved Level 4, and 34 students achieved Level 3, with an overall mean score of 3.67 and a standard deviation (S.D.) of 0.46.

The main discovery of this research demonstrated that developing English teachers through a Professional Learning Community enabled teachers to effectively instruct students in utilizing English. Therefore, continuous support for teacher development should be promoted to further enhance students' speaking skills.
