STRATEGIES FOR TRANSLATING CULTURAL WORDS FROM THAI TO ENGLISH: A CASE STUDY OF “KAEW THE PLAYFUL”

Abstract
This research aimed to investigate strategies for word-level translation of cultural words from Thai to English in the Thai version of "Kaew Chom Kaen" and the English version of "Kaew, the Playful” according to Mona Baker's theory. Percentage was then used to analyze the translation strategies which appeared in the English version book. The findings showed 1) the groups of cultural words were classified into 7 groups including 1) words for traditions, beliefs, values, and religious activities, 2) words for Thai traditional games or cultural activities, 3) words for places, 4) words for eatable things, 5) words for objects, 6) words related to environment, and 7) words related to people or relationship and 2) strategies for translating cultural words from Thai to English revealed as follows: 1) translation by a more general word (48.66%); 2) translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation (23.57%); 3) translation by cultural substitution (12.01%); 4) translation by paraphrasing using related words (9.90%); 5) translation by omission (3.76%); and 6) Translation by a more neutral/less expressive word (2.10%) respectively. Translation by paraphrasing using unrelated words and translation by Illustration were not found in this study.
