Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan: the development of tourism according to universal design for pay homage to the monks in the forest in Lanna

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to study the history and development of tourist attractions of temples that used to be places of the monks in the forest in Lanna. This research was a mixed method research. The research area was Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan in Chiang Mai Province. The target groups were divided into 2 groups: 1) a quantitative research of 400 people, including the elderly, disabled, monks, novices, and Thai tourists; 2) a qualitative research study of 25 people, including representatives of the elderly, people with disabilities, monks, novices, Thai tourists, communities, and related agencies. Research instruments were surveys, questionnaires, interview forms, and group discussion guidelines. Data were analyzed using basic statistics and content analysis then write a descriptive description. The results showed that


  1. Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan is a high potential Buddhist attraction located in the flat area in the center of Chiang Mai. Tourists around the world know and come to appreciate the beauty of the architecture inside the temple every day such as important Buddha images, sacred pagodas, ancient sites, and beautiful Buddhist art. Travel is convenient and comprehensive service. In addition, it used to be a place for dharma practice and retreat for many monks in the Dhammayut sect, such as Phra Upali Khunupamachan (Chan Sirijanto), and Luang Pu Man Phurithatto, etc. It is the only temple that Luang Pu Man Puritatto had been an abbot from the time he was ordained until died

  2. Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan has organized 5 types of universal design: 1) Handrails, 2) Radio broadcasting equipment, 3) Adequate lighting, 4) Meaningful characters/QR Code, and 5) Signboards. Temple items should be added and improved to be in line with the universal design of 12 items, such as ramps, parking lots, walkways, non-slip/hot foot protection, etc.
