Abstract

Background and Aims: The primary challenge facing second-year Vocational Certificate students in the Digital Graphics Department is a significant lack of students’ creative thinking in the 2D Animation course, specifically in the areas of storyboarding and character design. This issue stems from traditional instructional methods that emphasize theoretical rote memorization, thereby limiting students' opportunities to practice creative processes. To address this, learning activities based on the STEAM Education approach were implemented, integrating five disciplines—with a particular focus on the Arts to facilitate knowledge acquisition and foster innovation in 2D animation. Consequently, this research aimed to: (1) develop STEAM-based learning activities to enhance students’ creative thinking with an efficiency criterion of 80/80; (2) compare students’ post-intervention creative thinking scores against the 80% criterion of the total score; and (3) investigate students’ satisfaction regarding the implementation of these STEAM-based activities.

Methodology: This research employed a pre-experimental design, specifically utilizing the One-Shot Case Study model. The participants consisted of 18 second-year Vocational Certificate students from the Digital Graphics Department selected by Cluster Sampling. The research instruments included: (1) three lesson plans totaling 15 instructional hours, validated as highly appropriate (M = 4.83); (2) a creative thinking assessment tool with an Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) index of 1.00, evaluated using a scoring rubric; and (3) a 15-item satisfaction questionnaire regarding the STEAM Education activities (IOC = 1.00). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation.

Results: The research findings indicated that: (1) the efficiency of the STEAM Education learning activities designed to enhance creative thinking was 84.76/85.76, which exceeded the predetermined criterion of 80/80; (2) students’ post-intervention creative thinking scores were significantly higher than the 80% criterion at the .05 level of significance; and (3) students reported the highest level of overall satisfaction with the STEAM Education learning activities, with a mean score of 4.65 and a standard deviation of 0.53

Conclusion: The implementation of learning activities based on the STEAM Education approach was designed to enhance the creative thinking skills of second-year Vocational Certificate students in the Digital Graphics Department. This instructional strategy involved the integration of five subjects, with a particular emphasis on the role of Arts in facilitating interdisciplinary knowledge acquisition and fostering innovative creation. The approach specifically prioritized hands-on, project-based learning to actively engage students in their work.
