Application of Learning Theory to Develop Learner-Focused Teaching in the Digital Era

Abstract

Background and Aims: The digital era has brought rapid changes to the education system, requiring teaching and learning approaches to adapt to contemporary learning contexts. This article aims to examine the application of learning theory in connecting learning approaches to the characteristics of digital-age learners.

Methodology: This study employed documentary research to analyze concepts and knowledge from textbooks, academic works, and relevant sources, synthesizing them into a new conceptual framework for developing teaching in the digital era.

Results: The findings reveal that each learning theory has distinctive strengths and limitations in five aspects: learning, teaching, assessment, application, and motivation. The integration of the four major theories-Behaviorism, Cognitivism, Constructivism, and Connectivism-forms an Integrated Learning Cycle (ILC) that enhances instructional effectiveness.

Conclusion: Teaching in the digital era should adopt an integrated approach in which teachers serve as designers of learning environments, while learners act as creators, connectors, and reflective thinkers. This approach contributes to developing digital citizens with competencies who are prepared to face the challenges of the 21st century.
