Abstract

Background and Aims: Thailand is transitioning into an aging society. The government sector must adapt by developing services that promote the quality of life of the elderly. This study aimed to: (1) examine the levels of social support and quality of life among the elderly in Thepha Subdistrict Municipality, Thepha District, Songkhla Province; (2) compare the quality of life of the elderly classified by demographic factors; and (3) analyze the social support factors influencing the quality of life of the elderly in the study area.

Methodology: This research employed a quantitative approach. The sample consisted of 350 elderly individuals aged 60 years and over, residing in Thepha Subdistrict Municipality, selected through simple random sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.985. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis.

Results: The results showed that: (1) The overall level of social support perceived by the elderly was high. The emotional support dimension had the highest mean score, followed by informational support, while the tangible support dimension (material, financial, and services) had the lowest. The overall quality of life of the elderly was at a moderate level, with the highest mean in the social relationship domain and the lowest in the environmental domain. (2) Demographic factors such as gender, age, occupation, family living arrangements, and duration of illness significantly affected the quality of life at the 0.05 level. On the other hand, marital status, educational level, monthly income, savings, and debt status showed no significant difference. (3) Emotional support, informational support, and tangible support significantly influenced the quality of life of the elderly at the 0.05 level. These factors could predict 31.8% of the variance in the quality of life (Adjusted R² = .318).

Conclusion: The findings of this study provide guidelines for local administrative organizations to enhance social support mechanisms aimed at improving the quality of life of the elderly. Central to this approach is the development of financial literacy, including personal financial management and the provision of channels for financial assistance. Strengthening these aspects will enable the elderly to live a high-quality life.
