Abstract

This academic article aims to describe the appropriate composition techniques for vertical video applications and to provide applicative guidelines for communication through vertical videos, which are popular in response to the current vertical viewing behavior of users. As communication through mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets has shifted from horizontal to vertical orientation, the visual content has also changed. The elements of vertical video creation that can be applied include the rule of negative space, the rule of thirds, foreground, balance, camera angle, and image size. Positioning subjects or objects in the center of the frame can enhance the artistic value of vertical motion graphics and improve communication effectiveness. In vertical video shooting, it is crucial to be careful of the balance by ensuring the empty space, especially at the top or bottom of the frame, should not be too excessive. Due to the limited space in vertical videos, placing text or graphics may require overlapping with subjects or objects in the frame. Medium and long shots are generally considered suitable for vertical videos. The distinguishing feature of vertical video composition is the depth or perspective of the image.
