Waste Reduction and Returns Increase in Water Hyacinth Bag Production of Community Enterprise in Chiang Rai Province

Abstract

      This research aimed to study waste in the production of water hyacinth bags by a community enterprise and to improve the production process using the Lean concept in Thoeng district, Chiang Rai province. This study applied a qualitative research approach. The key informants consisted of 15 members of community enterprises and 8 experts. The data was collected using participant observation, focus group discussion, and a small group interview. After that, that the Value Stream Mapping (VSM) was applied to analyze the production process waste and create guidelines to reduce waste using the ECRS principle before the practice. The study revealed that 1) there were 5 types of waste in the bag production process: waiting, defects, excessive transportation, unnecessary motion, and inappropriate processing. The average production process cycle time was 12,471.23 minutes per lot with 38 activities. 2)The guideline to improve the production process was purchasing sulfur-treated water hyacinth, integrating procedures and implementing a one-piece flow system, doing two jobs in parallel, and increasing skills for workers. As a final consideration, all non-value-added activities (NVA) were eliminated, activities in the production process decreased to 16 activities, and the production time decreased by 62.48 percent. This shortened production cycle time provided the community enterprise the opportunity to enhance production quantities, increase output volumes to meet buyer demands, and consequently, raise higher financial returns.
