Development of Prototype Schools Emphasizing on Integration of Area Potential and Learners’ Science, Math and Technology Competencies in the Pilot Education Sandbox, Satun Province and the Southern Border Provinces

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to develop prototype schools emphasizing on the integration area potential with learners’science, math and technology (SMT) competencies in the pilot Education Sandbox. The target group was 4 schools from Satun, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. The research consisted of 4 phases: 1) development of project proposals by prototype schools, 2) use of mentoring support and empower prototype schools to create changes, and 3) creation of knowledge forum for exchange of knowledge, and 4) providing a forum to present innovations and expand ideas. The research tools were project proposal feasibility and quality assessment form, observational form, and focus group recording form. Data was analyzed by content analysis. The results showed that prototype schools consisting of 4 schools from 4 provinces have successfully implemented their project proposals as follows: 1) Satun Kindergarten, Satun Province, a competency-based curriculum development project in SMT that integrated with local identity 2) Ban Kato School, Pattani Province, a competency-based curriculum development project for 21st century learning 3) Santitham School, Yala Province, a research-based project that integrated sufficiency economy (mushroom project), and ) Su-ngai Kolok School, Narathiwat Province, Halabala project which encompassed the natural classroom and development of SMT competencies of learners. The performance of the 4 prototypes schools has caused changes at the school, teachers, students, and community.  In addition, 4 prototype schools presented their work and expanded their ideas to other 89 schools in the pilot education sandbox, Satun Province and the Southern Border Provinces to be a guideline for further school development.
