Abstract

The purpose of this research was to analyze roles and factors concerning the reproduction of Lam Phuan for inheriting the identity of Thai Phuan people using in-depth interviews. Key informants consisted of (1) Mor Lam and Mor Kan, (2) groups of local juveniles who were interested in inheriting Lam Phuan, (3) groups of local leaders, and (4) groups of people who were involved in promoting and supporting the activities of Lam Phuan's conservation and inheritance. Study areas were in Nakhon Nayok, Saraburi, Sing Buri, Suphanburi, and Lopburi. Data were collected from January 2017 - May 2018, January 2019 - December 2019, and November 2021 - April 2022. The result revealed that Lam Phuan always maintained social roles and individuals. However, some transformations and changes in roles were presented according to social variation. Moreover, new roles were included, such as (1) tourism, (2) conservation, (3) cultural reproduction, (4) hobby, and (5) extra-curricular activities. Factors affecting Lam Phuan reproduction were: (1) internal factors i.e. the integrity of Lam Phuan plays' components which indicate ethnic identity, and (2) external factors i.e. support from the government, education institutes, and business sectors. Lam Phaun was, therefore, the cultural capital and reproduced in central areas of Thailand.
