The Work-Life Quality and Work-Life Balance in Veterinary Profession: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract
This research was aimed to study and compare work-life quality and work-life balance of 11,585 veterinarians. The sample was randomized of 428 veterinarians. The research instrument was a rating scale questionnaire with the reliability 0.89 assessed by Cronbach’s alpha-coefficient. The data were collected from veterinarians who worked during September 2021. The data was analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The hypotheses were tested using t-test and One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The Scheffe’s method was used to analyze the multiple comparison test of the founded differences. The results revealed that 1) the different ages, work experiences, positions, job descriptions, monthly incomes, and working hours resulted the different quality and balance of working life of the veterinarians, 2) the overall level of the work-life quality was at a moderate level. The highest mean score of each aspect was opportunity of personal capacities development aspect and followed by the aspects of working that useful and relevant to social, the aspect of social integration and cooperation, the aspect of being in the objective of private right, and the aspect of judgment process which were at a good level. For the aspects of the advancement and stability of work, the aspect of safe and healthy environment, the aspect of balance between working life and private life and the aspect of adequate and fair compensation were at a moderate level. For the work-life balance, the overall result was at a moderate level. The aspect with the highest mean score was the mutuality in mind which was at a good level, and followed by the aspect of satisfaction and the aspect of time which were at a moderate level. This research will benefit to the organizations in developing their policies to improve work-life quality and work-life balance of veterinarians to enhance the veterinary profession in Thailand. It is also beneficial to the graduates from doctor of veterinary medicine program as the initial information to choose a profession that is consistent with the needs and way of life of each one. The further research trends may focus on the study that separately focus on the job characteristics of veterinarians for the in-depth data, including the study of other social factors or other psychological factors that concern with work-life quality and work-life balance.
