Desirable Characteristics in Khmer Language Textbooks of Secondary Education of the Kingdom of Cambodia

Abstract

The research article aims to examine the Khmer language textbooks of secondary education of the kingdom of Cambodia to realize the methods of cultivation of the desirable characteristics. These desirable charateristics are the things that the government want to cultivate to the Cambodian youths through textbooks. The reseachers translate 4 textbooks of secondary education of the kingdom of Cambodia from Khmer language into Thai, then investigate to find out the methods of cultivation and the desirable characteristics. The result of study shows that there are 3 approaches to cultivate the desirable characteristics to children i.e. 1) repetition of topics, 2) repetition of content in the same class, and 3) repetition of content in different classes. The desirable characteristics appeared in the content of Khmer language textbooks are patriotism, a pride of own nation, the responsibility and being virtuous and moral person. These characteristics are desirable for the Cambodian government to train Cambodian youth through textbooks. The study can make more understanding of characteristics of Cambodian people
