Examining the Relationship between and the Comparison of Aggressive Behavior Across Four Parenting Styles in Thailand
Main Article Content
Abstract
Aggressive behavior is an undesirable behavior that has received considerable research attention in the investigation of behavioral causes. One frequently discussed contributing factor is parenting style, which can be categorized into four distinct types. However, foundational studies examining these two constructs within the Thai context remain limited. This study therefore aims to: 1) examine the relationship between aggressive behavior and parenting styles, and 2) compare aggressive behavior across different parenting styles. These objectives will contribute to expanding the fundamental knowledge base in this area. Data were collected from a sample of 293 participants aged 18-25 years (mean age 21.85 years, standard deviation = 1.98), comprising 83.28% males and 16.72% females. Aggression Questionnaire and Parenting Style Rating Scale were used for data collection. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and one-way ANOVA. The results revealed that aggressive behavior had significant positive correlations with authoritarian (r= .44, p < .01), permissive (r = .40, p < .01), and neglectful (r = .45, p < .01) parenting style, but showed no relationship with authoritative parenting style. Additionally, the study found that all four parenting styles - authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful parenting style - demonstrated statistically significant differences in aggressive behavior levels (F(3, 98) = 16.66, p < .01). This study confirms the relationships and differences between the four parenting styles and aggressive behavior in the Thai context and additionally finds that ambiguous or mixed parenting styles account for a greater proportion than the clearly defined four styles. This reflects current parenting trends where caregivers adapt their parenting approaches and blend traditional styles to be more suitable for different situations and individual children.
