Love in the Chinese Bible: A Linguistic and Cultural Discourse Analysis of the Pauline Epistles

Abstract
This study investigates the term 爱 (ài, love) in the Pauline Epistles of the Chinese Bible through qualitative research and content analysis, employing the frameworks of Intercultural Sociopragmatics (ISP) and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The data sources consist of the Chinese Bible of the National Committee of the Three-Self Patriotic Movement (2009) and the Revised Chinese Union Version (2010). The findings reveal that the concept of “love” is not limited to the word 爱 but extends across 19 lexical variations. Among these, the most frequent are 爱 and 爱心: “love” with 爱 appears 29 times (48.30%), “love” (n.) with 爱 27 times (45.00%), “love” with 爱心 once (1.66%), and “love” (n.) with 爱心 33 times (55.00%). These lexical items represent fundamental love, moral love, and compassion, while simultaneously reflecting ideological adaptation and functioning as discursive mechanisms consistent with the policy of the Sinicization of Christianity. The findings indicate that biblical language in the Chinese context serves not merely as a vehicle of faith but as a site of negotiation and construction of religious ideology.
