A Study of Si Thep Legends and Folk Narratives as Oral and Local Histories

Abstract
Si Thep legends are intangible cultural heritage that has long been associated with the people of Si Thep, Phetchabun Province, but they are little known, even after Si Thep was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. This research article explores the legends and folk narratives associated with the ancient town of Si Thep, and examines the role of legend in serving as oral history and local history for the local people of Si Thep. The main methods used in this study were ethnographic fieldwork, supplemented by documentary research. According to the research, there are three main categories into which the legends of Si Thep can be divided: hero legends, historical and local legends, and local anecdotes. This research article suggests that, when examined holistically, these three sub-genres of legend serve as vernacular forms of local history in the community, differing from mainstream history in several ways, including their subjectivity and reliance on supernatural elements. However, these local histories can profoundly convey a sense of Si Thep identity through the perspectives of the locals themselves.
