The Image of Qin Shihuang Appearing in Movies and TV Series

Abstract

This research aims to study the portrayal of the character Qin Shi Huang in films and television series from 1986 to 2024, covering 27 works. The study found that the portrayal of Qin Shi Huang during this period can be divided into several aspects. The character’s physical appearance is typically depicted with a fierce demeanor and determined eyes. Positive traits often emphasize maturity over virtue, while negative traits highlight cruelty and authoritarianism. Although the character is more commonly portrayed with negative traits than positive ones, recent portrayals have introduced new positive traits, such as dignity and morality, while downplaying negative aspects like lustfulness, lack of qualifications for succession, and the obsession with immortality. These portrayals are influenced by historical contexts, literary interpretations, cultural influences, media narrative techniques, and the creators’ attitudes. These factors aim to encourage audiences to reflect on the ethical use of power or align the character's image with state ideologies that promote nationalism.
