Enhancing Reading Comprehension Skills Through Cooperative Learning Management and the 5W1H Questioning Technique for Grade 8 Students

Abstract

This research aimed to compare the reading comprehension abilities of 2nd-year high school students before and after participating in a cooperative learning method combined with the 5W1H questioning technique and to assess students’ satisfaction with the learning approach. The research employed a one-group pretest-posttest experimental design. The sample consisted of 40 students from Class 2/11 of a secondary school, selected through purposive sampling. The instruments used included (1) a cooperative learning plan combined with the 5W1H technique, (2) a reading comprehension test, and (3) a student satisfaction survey. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and paired-sample t-test. The findings revealed that the students’ reading comprehension ability after participating in the cooperative learning method combined with the 5W1H questioning technique was significantly higher than before the learning experience at the 0.05 level. Regarding students’ satisfaction with the learning approach, the overall satisfaction was at a high level (SD = 0.81) Among the 10 assessed aspects, the highest average scores were observed in the following areas: participation in learning activities (M = 4.50, SD = 0.72), excitement and challenge during the learning process (M = 4.23, SD = 0.78), ability to grasp the main ideas of the content (M = 4.20, SD = 0.85), and enjoyment in learning (M = 4.10, SD = 0.85).
