A Journey of “Phra Sang”: An Analytical Study of Sang Thong Comic Books as Bildungsroman

Abstract

This article aims to study the comic adaptations of Sang Thong, specifically Plik Tamnan Chaochai Phajonphai by Becassine and Sangsan Story by Kwanrapee, focusing on their creative techniques that incorporate Thai literature and literary conventions to generate humor. Additionally, it examines their themes, concepts, and significance as Bildungsroman. The research findings indicate that the comic creators incorporate the narrative structure of Sang Thong and Chakchak Wongwong folktales—including key elements such as an unusual birth, the acquisition of knowledge, an adventurous journey, and the process of choosing a partner—into their storytelling to create humor. Additionally, they playfully subvert traditional character conventions in Thai literature, integrate characters from different literary works, and utilize the comic format—both visuals and storytelling—to parody familiar cultural imagery within the Thai context. In terms of themes and concepts, both comics explore the process of learning and self-development during adolescence and early adulthood. They raise awareness of the desirable qualities of a well-developed individual as a responsible citizen in both Thai society and the global community of the 21st century. Humor plays a crucial role in relieving readers from stress and pressure during their growth journey, while also serving as an outlet for their frustrations with the traditional content and composition methods of Thai literature. Furthermore, this study highlights the interconnectedness between the core elements of the Bildungsroman genre and Thailand’s literary culture, which serves as a cultural resource fostering new branches of Bildungsroman in diverse forms within the Thai literary context.
